1. “Boobies” Bracelet
In Baltic High School in South Dakota there’s a ban of bracelets that bring the message I Love (heart) Boobies.” It might sound like usual ban having in mind all the reasons why high school students would wear such bracelets, but these are a little different. Their purpose was to raise the awareness of breast cancer among young girls. Students’ parents were fine with it, other schools principals were fine, too, but those from Baltic High School are bigger Catholics than the Pope.
2. Father’s Day Cards
Everyone wants to avoid discrimination in schools, but some people go too far. Principals of an elementary school in Scotland didn’t want children without father feel like they’re different than their friends and banned the Father’s Day Cards. It’s unknown if they feel better now, but this act is absurd because of the fact that Mother’s Day Cards were never banned.
3. “Meep” Word
The word “meep” is kind of weird word that was made famous by Beeker the character from The Muppet Show, so it’s not surprise the fact that kids uses it often. However, it’s even weirder that a school in Danvers, MA, banned it because they found the word too distractive for school. That’s how Beeker’s trade mark word was put among other banned four letters words.
4. POGS
POGS are one of the favorites for all kids who grew up in 90’s. Nevertheless, some master mind found them to be too violent. Despite that, they thought that POGS also cause stress to the young gentle mind. It is unbelievable what school principals from Washington and Arizona have done, having in mind the amount of beautiful memories these kinds of toys have made to kids from 90’s.
5. Hugs
A lot of schools across United States and a lot of other countries have banned hugs because it was distractive. Why? There’s not enough secularity or what? When showing emotions is banned, maybe kids shouldn’t smile at school, they shouldn’t cry sometimes to avoid punishment, or…
6. Dancing
Remember what had Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) suffered in Footloose just to organize a simple dance? Well, it seems society changes very slow. Even today dancing in schools is banned for being provocative. And we are not talking about striptease dance, Hokey-Pokey and Chicken dance are banned as well.
7. Christmas Trees
This ban is a little bit sick. The Christmas tree in a school in Ashland, Oregon was banned because some parents found it too religious. It is sick because the tree was tagged with suggestions for gifts to the needy children. We saw examples of lack of secularism before on this list, but this is the other extreme, and it’s unreasonable as the first one.
8. Blogging
Students could easily become victims to sexual abusers so they shouldn’t have a blog. That’s the explanation that the Reverend Kieran McHugh from Catholic high school in Sparta, New Jersey, gave to his students. No more blogs or My Space profile (it was in 2005). A lot of the kids were protesting, but the Principal thought he knew better. It is unknown if he is proud of the results of his measure.
9. Red Ink (For Teachers)
Students are not the only victims of Principals’ weird decisions. Perhaps some kids had nightmares because of watching the red ink on their papers too often, so they were distressed. A school in United Kingdom banned the red ink because it was too upsetting for children and put in use only blue and black ink. When they’ll become upsetting maybe we will see Fs in papers with green or orange ink.
10. The Dictionary
Yes, you read well. In some schools in United Kingdom the dictionary was banned because the kids were searching the meaning of “inappropriate” words. However, the anatomy book wasn’t banned, although it consist drawings of some “inappropriate” parts of the body. Maybe this book is the reason why children know “too much” at early age.
