Apple has purchased the 98-acre parcel of land in Cupertino, California, that was formerly used by Hewlett-Packard, according to Mercury News. The purchase makes Apple Cupertino’s largest land owner.
Apple PR chief Steve Dowling told the Mercury News that Apple now occupies a total of 57 buildings in Cupertino and that Apple is “bursting at the seams.”
“The offices will give us more room for our employees as we continue to grow,” Dowling added.
The Mercury News also reported that the Hewlett-Packard property is across the street from a 50-acre site that Apple had previously acquired and announced as the location for a planned second campus, to augment its main headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop.
The price that Apple paid Hewlett-Packard was not announced, and in September, Apple reported that it had 46,600 full-time employees. “Local real estate experts said HP’s asking price may have been $300 million or more, but they also said the final amount may have been less because of the sluggish commercial real estate market,” Mercury News reported.
Apple bought the land despite the fact it has only recently started to use some of the buildings that were in place on land that it bought in2006. The delay in using the 2006 land purchase was due to issues getting the land zoned for commercial use.
