Military officials are searching for answers behind a vapor trail that lit up the sky Monday night over Southern California.

Reporters asked the Air Force, the Pentagon, the Navy, the U.S. Northern Command, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Federal Aviation Administration what that happened at sunset but none of them couldn’t explain.

The Pentagon said in a statement: “While there is nothing at this time that leads the Department of Defense to believe this is a missile launch, the department and other US government agencies with expertise in aviation and space continue to look into the condensation trail (contrail) seen and reported off the coast of southern California on Monday evening.”

A defense expert and director of GlobalSecurity.org, John Pike believes he has solved this mystery. “It’s clearly an airplane contrail. It’s an optical illusion that looks like it’s going up, whereas in reality it’s going towards the camera. The tip of the contrail is moving far too slowly to be a rocket. When it’s illuminated by the sunset, you can see hundreds of miles of it all the way to the horizon,” Pike explained.

KCBS-TV news helicopter, a CBS affiliate in Los Angeles shot the video 35 miles west out to sea, north of Catalina Island. The video was posted online and it showed an object flying off the Pacific coast, leaving a large condensation trail or contrail, that turned pink in the setting sun.
