Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat, a couple from Thailand, have locked lips for 46 hours, 24 minutes and nine seconds to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The kiss was marked the longest recorded smooch in history.
Fourteen couples began the marathon smooch on Sunday in Pattaya, Thailand, and seven were still in the running Monday afternoon.
Participants had to be legally married and at least 20 years old. Competitors could not break lip contact for any reason. They were even required to go to the restroom together. They are allowed to drink, eat and use the lavatory, provided they do not break their embrace. They were allowed to drink liquids, but only through straws as they continued to touch lips.
“We want to show that love is meaningful and powerful,” said Somporn Naksuetrong, the manager of a museum that organized the competition. “It’s not easy to stand there and kiss for that long. They really have to help each other and support each other.”
The winning pair received a 100,000 baht (£2,032) cash prize and a diamond ring worth 50,000 baht (£1,016).
The previous Guinness World Record of the longest kiss was held by Germans Kristina Reinhart and Nikola Matovic who kissed continuously for 32 hours 7 minutes and 14 seconds two years ago.
