An Illinois man, who never played guitar and never smoked cigars, has created 17 guitars from cigar boxes and also plans to create a dulcimer. Currently, he is working on an eight-string mandolin.
When Chuck Meyer, a mechanical engineer of New Lenox, was a teenager, he tried playing guitar, but it lasted only about 10 minutes. He quickly abandoned it after realizing he wasn’t “perfect.”
But last year Meyer found a video about cigar-box guitars while he was surfing the web. He discovered Cigar Box Nation, where he found instructions for playing and building the guitars.
“My jaw dropped. The sound was so clean and simple. I thought, ‘Wow! I want to do that. Wow! I want to make one.’”
After making 17 cigar box guitars, Meyer started learning to play guitar again. He strums out a simple “I Walk the Line” and “Amazing Grace.”
“These are not mass-produced,” Meyer said about his guitars. “There are no two alike. What appealed to me was its simplicity.”
Meyer said that making guitars is strictly a hobby for him and it will never be a money-making venture. He said he is really happy just building them.
