A sequel to the 2009 blockbuster hit, psychological horror film “Paranormal Activity 2″ took in an estimated $20 million in 3,216 theaters, including $6.3 million from its midnight screenings. The movie directed by Tod Williams is on the way to gross something north of $30 million in its opening weekend. Considering the movie cost reportedly $3 million and Paramount spent a little on advertising, this R rated movie should be a cash cow for the studio.
Another new movie “Jackass 3-D” which had grossed $66 million as of Thursday held down the second position on Friday and grabbed another $7.7 milion.
Third place on Friday went to Summit’s action movie Red with a strong $4.5 million.
Clint Eastwood’s drama “Hereafter” with Matt Damon in the fourth slot with $4 million and should finish the weekend somewhere in the $10 to $11 million range.
Sony’s The Social Network was fifth with $2.3 million and it closes in on the $75 million mark at the domestic box office.
