Seven Every Day Products (That Don’t Work)

Every day we spend millions of dollars on products that are supposed to preform miracles. Want soda that has all the taste of regular soda but none of the calories? Go diet. Want to make your computer run faster with a simple download? Get a registry cleaner. However science just isn’t at the point where it can do away with all of the problems that affect the modern person, so to get around that products will just lie, and because of the placebo effect you probably convince yourself that they are actually working. But it is a lie, and we here at urbantitan have the facts to prove it.

1: Diet Soda

                                                                           Source:
Despite claims of “zero calories” diet sodas are actually worse for trying to lose weight than regular soda. In a study done by the American Diabetes Association, they followed people who drank regular soda, diet soda, and no soda at all. The people who drank diet soda experienced a 70% greater increases in waist sizes than people who drank regular or no soda, and drinking just two diet sodas a day increased it to 600% greater waist size gains. Couple that with the fact that diet soda increases your risk for diabetes and you have a soda you want to stay away from. Plus it tastes bad.

2: Chapstick

                                                                            Source:
Most chapsticks contains a product known as Phemol which actually irritates your lips and makes them drier. In addition, the irritation makes you more likely to try and lick your lips which will also make your lips drier. So why do they use Phemol? Simple. Its addictive and chapstick addiction is now a medically recognized disease.

3: System Cleaners

                                                                              Source
You’ve probably seen the commercials advertising there ability to clean up all the crap that’s been building up on your computer, but these claims are actually crap. PC world ran a test and found that in most cases they actually slowed down the computers, testing 4 of the major brands. The reason some people think they work is that the cleaners will have misleading or outright lying claims of having fixed something on your computer every time you run it, in which case the placebo effect kicks in.

4: Shape up Shoes
                                                                                  Source:
These are getting less popular now but they have been marketed as a way to lose weight, just by walking. But when these claims are put to the test its found that they actually don’t do anything. However a desire to lose weight with little work has been keeping these things selling. Well that and commercials like this one

5: Child Car Seats
                                                                       Source:
It used to be the law that no one had to wear car seats, however angry parents insisted that there needed to be extra protection for little kids. And while these are a life saver for kids age 0-2, it turns out that after that they become less effective than seat belts. This is a shame because federal law and most state laws insist they sit in them until age 4, wasting hundreds of millions of dollars every year on something that doesn’t work.
.
6: Taurine and Ginseng
                                                                              Source:
These are almost a requirement for all energy drinks these days and you see them displayed prominently on cans of monsters, red bull, and the rest. But energy drink companies have all but admitted they only put them in there so that they can impress you with there big sciency words and make you think it does anything. The truth is taurine cant pass into your brain so it has zero effect on your sense of tired, and while ginseng can actually make you a little smarter for a bit, it doesn’t do anything to help with energy
.
7: Sunscreen
                                                                                 Source:
Sunscreen isn’t considered to be a risk to your health so it is generally unregulated. As a result, 92% of sunscreen sold in the US is considered to be pretty much snake oil, in that they dont prevent skin disease. In fact, certain ingredients found in sunscreen has actually been found to cause cancer not prevent it
