10-year-old indeed gave birth a baby of 2.9 kg, a week ago in Jerez de la Frontera, in Spain. The new mother and her child are “in perfect health condition” within their families, “said Micaela Navarro, delegate for Equality and the Welfare of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia. Navarro also said this event is “more unique than rare”.
Young girl’s mother, who has identified herself only as Olimpia, says she’s delighted to have a new granddaughter and she doesn’t understand why the birth has shocked anyone. “It is a joy, not a drama” grandmother said.
She told reporters Wednesday that the baby’s father is a 13-year-old boy who is still in Romania. The lovebirds were already living together in Romania. Olimpia and her daughter are Romanian Gypsies, and the mother says it is their custom to allow girls to marry young even though that’s against the law in Romania. She thought it was perfectly normal.
Spanish authorities have released few details about the case to protect the girl’s privacy. The authorities are now studying whether to let her and her family retain custody of the baby.
According to local newspaper Diario de Sevilla, the family live in a crumbling tenanment in calle Téjar of the Jérez village of Lebrija, in a block colonised “by Peruvians and Romanian gypsies who work at scrap metal collection and begging”.
