US company known for making the Taser stun gun unveiled a version of the device designed for use on large animals.
The new weapon can temporarily incapacitate moose, bears and other large mammals, and is designed to increase the safety of park rangers and wildlife authorities, BBC News reported.
The Taser Wildlife Electronic Control Device is a semi-automatic, three-shot Taser designed specifically to incapacitate big animals from as far away as nearly eleven metres.
With a retail price of about $2,000, the wildlife stun gun is said to be nearly indestructible by the elements, able to survive rain, sea spray, dust, electrostatic discharge and short-term water submersion.
According to the company officials, the laser-sighted gun is based on the company’s most advanced police Taser, the X3, but is optimized to work on large animals with thick hides.
“We are in the business of protecting lives — and the TASER Wildlife ECD will help wildlife professionals protect wildlife by offering another tool to help resolve human-animal conflicts,” said Rick Smith, CEO and cofounder of TASER International.
However, the United Nations classifies Tasers as a “form of torture” because they can cause “acute pain.”
