Director Ron Howard says the gay joke uttered by Vince Vaughn that was cut from a trailer for an upcoming comedy film “The Dilemma” will in fact appear in the film when it opens January 14.
A few months back, GLAAD began protests over the trailer for the new movie The Dilemma directed by Ron Howard. The studio, Universal, caved and removed a scene in which Vince Vaughn referred to electric cars as “gay” from the trailer. GLAAD continued the assault, asking the Universal to remove the scene from the movie, leading to rampant speculation that director Ron Howard would re-cut the film.
Ron Howard has come out in defense of his decision to keep a joke that has been deemed offensive by pundits and a gay rights group in his the movie. So, there would be no change to the film, though he supported the change to the trailer.
“The Dilemma is a comedy for grown-ups, not kids. It’s true that the moment took on extra significance in light of some events that surrounded the release of the trailer and the studio made the decision to remove it from advertising, which I think was appropriate. I believe in sensitivity but not censorship,” Howard said.
