You might think curses only happen in scary films, but there are some freaky coincidences in real life. Here are the top 7 real life curses:
1. Curse of the Hope Diamond
The Hope Diamond is a brilliant blue diamond, famous for its size (46 carats or 9 g) and more interestingly, the alleged Hope Curse. The origins of the fantastic jewel is shrouded in mystery. Claims range from it being stolen from the eye of a sculpture of the goddess Sita, to an ancient Indian mine 350 years ago.
Those who own the Hope Diamond seem to have extremely bad luck, with dozens of reports includings: the original owner being torn apart by dogs in Russia, King Louis XVI being beheaded, the mutilation of Princesse de Lamballe, and the insanity of the jewelers who handled the diamond.
2. Curse of Billy Penn
For many decades in Philadelphia, there was an unwritten rule that no building would be taller than the City Hall. This was because there was a statue of Pennsylvania William Penn on top of the Hall. In 1987, a new skyscraper was built that was taller than the City Hall by 397 ft (121 m). Before the skyscraper, Philadelphia sport teams had enjoyed a slew of successes. Over the next two decades, however, Philadelphia would narrowly lose many chamionships.
In 2007, the Comcast building finished construction, and was the new tallest building. Builders attempted to lift the curse by fitting a small figurine of Penn on the Comcast’s needle–eerily, it worked, and the Phillies would win the World Series the next year.
3. Superman Curse
People involved with media adaptations of the DC superhero Superman seem to meet unfortunate accidents. The lists consists of almost two dozen people, most famously Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in the film series. He was thrown from a horse and paralyzed as a result. Other actors include Marlon Brandon and George Reeves (no relation to Christopher Reeve).
4. Curse of the pharaohs
The curse of the pharaohs refers to those than disturb the pharaohs mummies of Ancient Egypt is placed under a curse. Several of the pyramids’ walls have inscriptions cursing raiders. Most famously is the curse of Tutankhamen: Lord Carnavon, the financial backer for the Tutankhamen expedition, would die of a mosquito bite infection, with the bite on the exact same location as one on Tutankhamen’s cheek. 11 other people related to the expedition died mysteriously, with one of them killing themselves and writing the suicide note, “I really cannot stand any more horrors.”
5. The 27 Club
The 27 Club is a group of famous rock and blues musicians who all died at age 27, often under suspicious circumstances. The start of the club was the death of several musicians within two years, specifically: Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. Another famous musicians who passed away at 27 include Grateful Dead founder Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Badfinger’s Peter Ham.
6. Kennedy Curse
Many members of the famous and influential Kennedy family have suffered and died from strange causes. This has led many to believe the family are cursed. Most famously are the Kennedy brothers John and Robert, both assassinated by gunshots, and John Jr., who was killed in an airplane crash along with his wife and sister-in-law.
7. Curse of the Bambino
The Curse of the Bambino started after the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth, nicknamed The Bambino, to the New York Yankees in 1919. Up till that point, the Yankees had never won a World Series, but after the trade to 2003, the Yankees won the Series 26 times. The Sox? None.
Finally, in 2004, the Red Sox won–against the Yankees too!
